Recently named Floridian of the Year 2018 by Florida Trend Magazine, Dr. Kiran C. Patel has made global philanthropy his life’s work. After achieving his medical degree in the early 1970’s in India, Dr. Patel and his family immigrated to the United States in 1976. Dr. Patel continued his education at Columbia University in New York City, where he specialized in Cardiology. Migrating to Tampa, Florida in 1982, Dr. Patel quickly became one of the Bay Area’s pre-eminent cardiologists and a prominent leader among the Indian community; soon after a leader throughout all of Tampa Bay.
With a visionary outlook of the growing trend towards managed healthcare, Dr. Patel purchased a struggling HMO which over time, he built into America’s fifth largest. He has been called the man responsible for almost single-handedly transforming the face of healthcare in Florida. Dr. Patel eventually sold his HMO for over 5 times the purchase price, making him an instant multi-millionaire. Since that time, Dr. Patel has built an expansive business empire with impressive diversity into multiple industries. His unerring business acumen and incredible success has lead many to believe that Dr. Patel indeed has the ‘Midas Touch’.
Dr. Kiran Patel and his wife, Dr. Pallavi Patel, have always looked for opportunities to advance and improve the plight of others through educational initiatives, scholarships and healthcare services both in the USA and in their native countries, India and Zambia. Through the Patel Family Foundation, the CA Patel Learning Institute and the Patel Hospital and Community Health Center were founded in Gujarat, India, making modern K-12 education and healthcare in the rural area of Vadodara available for the first time.
Dr. Patel’s list of business and philanthropy accolades, appointments and awards easily fill an entire page. However, the best is yet to come. Currently, Dr. Patel is the only person of Indian origin to have colleges named for him in the US; and within three years, Dr. Patel expects to be the first global citizen to have founded colleges on three continents: North America, Asia and Africa.
